Navistar International is the largest U.S. builder of long-haul freight trucks.

A new International/Navistar truck is much more expensive than any new F550. Also, maintenance, fuel cost, and insurance are much more. This is a good truck for a big van body, for hauling a huge amount of weight.

In a 2012 study, International ranks second in the vocational segment.

  • Older models have to be retrofitted or require engine upgrades.
  • Navistar used an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology that directed emissions back into the engine‚Äôs cylinders to lower the released nitrogen oxide. The technology had the purpose of complying with federal engine emission rules. However, the technique did not reduce emissions sufficiently and that led to the company paying a penalty of almost $2.000 per engine.
  • Class action lawsuits were filed accusing the company, accusing it of knowingly selling defective engines.
  • The company has implemented improvements that have reduced warranty claims. It now updates used trucks through a reconditioning program.
